I have been asked to identify some trends in GME for a strategic planning retreat our hospital is having. We will probably be covering topics such as proposed new residencies/fellowships, recruiting issues, GME finance/reimbursement issues and how to make better use of our major affiliated institutions. "Trands" is a very general topic and I can speak about almost anything of interest. Any input or interesting "factoids" would be most appreciated! Randy, I'd love to help you with the GME finance/reimbursement issues section. It may be easier to discuss off-line. If you're interested, I can be contacted at (440) 605-1261 or valerie.chiappone@uhhs.com. |

There are many predicting a physician shortage in years to come and allopathic, osteopathic, and off-shore medical schools are all increasing their enrollment rapidly. In Internal Medicine, there appears to be a trend towards hospitalist medicine and this is an emerging specialty. Just two, somewhat random, thoughts. |

On GME TRENDS... I'd borrow liberally from expert presentations done at national meetings (AHME! AAMC ACGME ACCME etc)by the gurus that are available on the web...(with attribution, of course)...just about everyboidy posts these now... This will give your presentation some validity..."The Prophet is never heard in his own land"... Many of them are put up in PDF files which you can "photo" to a new PPT page (may be fuzzy) or go to the referenced source... AAMC's Bob Dickler does a State of GME update in about every meeting (see his presentation on the Spring 2006 AHME Presentations page)...Dean Tom Nasca of Jefferson has an interesting FUTURE VIEW presentation that he has given to AAMC COTH, the Alliance, and AHME (look on the 2005 presentations)... One of the more provocative presentations I've seen was INTEL Founder Andy Grove's at the 2005 COTH meeting "Digital Health: Pointers Learned from the Technology Industry" (attached)...but it may be a little too far out for what you need to do... Physician manpower is the topic of the day...take a look at the PRESENATIONS that are posted in the AHME Message Board under AHME STRATEGIC and OPERATIONAL ISSUES: Physician Manpower. As you TROLL through all these presentations there is a tendency for us to include everything. I'd keep in mind that you are presenting to administratiors who will be primarily concerned how Trends will / could affect them...therefore I'd include a few summary slides on speculating how they will / may specifically affect your institution... Best of luck on your retreat...might you consider posting your presentation here for us to plagiarize ? (with attribution, of course!) Charlie Daschbach |

AAMC's Academic Medicine-- Management Series just published their next group of articles on "Strategic Alliances in Academic Medicine". You can down load the articles from the AAMC Academic Medicine web site...but I've attached them below. QUESTIONS FOR THE DIO: How can we learn from these examples ? Are there 'universal truths' in academic relationships? How much of common sense business principles do we need / forget in academic affiliations ? Should I pass any of these along to our CEO, Dean or Strategic Planning people ? Charlie Daschbach |

We just did a statewide GME conference in Ohio focused on the plans to increase medical students while dealing with the fixed caps on funding as well as the increased threats to the IME reimbursement with the latest MedPac analysis presented to congress. All attendees appreciated the time to explore these issues and are interested in ways we can collaborate in GME for the future. I have attached the brochure for details. Good Luck!
